Villa d'Este

If you have to recover from jet lag, the Villa D’Este in Cernobbio on Lake Como is a perfect place.  A brief hour north of Milan’s Malpensa airport, the hotel welcome’s you with large manicured grounds, open arms and a chance to rest.
When we arrived, our room was not yet ready, so they gave us a temporary room where we could freshen up and sleep for a few hours.
Bath salts and more
The Villa d’Este presents life on a palatial scale but not intimidating. The hall ways and rooms are spacious. The decor, which has not changed in the dozen years that we’ve been visiting, is 19th century country house comfortable, and Wi-Fi works everywhere (and is included in the price).  The bed linens are linen and the bath salts and shampoos plentiful.

However, the antique looking frames on the flat screen TVs in our room were a definite oddity.
The heavy fringe is not a favorite either.
Dinners on the Veranda were delicious and the rain on the huge canvass awning added to the atmosphere.  My “lasagnette” with meltingly tender veal and mushrooms was comfort food at a new level of sophistication.
Mr. Wonderful’s stuffed courgette (zucchini) flowers were both beautiful and delicious.  Dessert was also near at hand.
The rain did not discourage live music and after-dinner dancing under umbrellas and awnings.  So romantic.

Finally, the service is always available and impeccable.  With their attention to detail, the staff noticed that Mr. W's birthday was on the day we were checking out, so they surprised us with an "early" birthday card, champagne and hors d'oeuvres the day before.

Yes, I think this hotel makes it in my top 5.  I'm already looking forward to a return visit.
